Celebrating Handmade Beauty: Louise from Thrown Pottery

At Coast and Banks, we take pride in curating gifts that feel truly special—elevating the art of gifting by showcasing the incredible work of local artisans. One of the most loved makers in our collection is Louise from Thrown Pottery. Her handcrafted ceramics embody everything we adore about Gold Coast artistry: rustic charm, authenticity, and a touch of the unexpected.

Louise’s pieces are at the heart of what makes Coast and Banks so unique. Each item is handcrafted with care, ensuring no two pieces are ever the same. Her chunky candles and coffee mugs are among our absolute favourites—offering warmth, texture, and an organic aesthetic that makes every sip of coffee or flickering candlelight feel extra special. And let’s not forget her salad bowls—each one a true work of art, bringing effortless elegance to any table.

Beyond her stunning craftsmanship, Louise herself is a treasure. She is one of the kindest and most generous people we’ve had the pleasure of working with. Her passion for pottery shines through in every creation, making her pieces more than just functional—they tell a story of dedication, skill, and heart. You simply don’t find handmade beauty like this in most gift hampers.

Supporting local artisans like Louise is what Coast and Banks is all about. When you gift a piece of Thrown Pottery, you’re not just giving something beautiful—you’re sharing a part of the Gold Coast’s vibrant creative spirit.

Explore our collection and experience the magic of handcrafted charm. Because the best gifts are the ones that tell a story.

✨ What sparked your love for ceramics?

I’ve always dabbled in ceramics and classes. I used to be a graphic designer, so have a creative side. After working as a graphic designer in Sydney, I would go to ceramics evening school classes. When I moved to the Gold Coast, my husband bought me a wheel, and I went to different classes and workshops. After practising a lot and making lots of ‘dipping dishes’ my friends said I should sell them. My market career started as I had my first stall with The Village Markets 7 years ago.

✨ How do you create pieces that feel both modern and timeless?

I keep up to date with trends on Instagram, following ceramicists all over the world. I have also tried various pieces over the years and I think only this year I have decided that I am going to hone in on the most popular items and discard the rest. By attending so many markets it’s great to gage what people are buying and interested in. I find things that people like and now make those items in my style, I’ve added more colour as that was popular also. I think ceramics that are useful and functional around the home are a clear winner. So mugs, chunky candles and salad bowls are my favourite pieces.

✨ What’s your favourite part of working with clay?

Sitting down to start a piece, getting that clay out the bag, it takes you away from the pressures of day to day life. I love making work from a lump of clay. It still amazes me! I used to be solely in front of a screen designing so I love the fact that I don’t do that any more. I do love doing a little design work on the computer from time to time, but it’s nice that it’s not for long!

✨ What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone wanting to try pottery?

Give it a go. You never know til you try! My workshops have been so great taking people out of their comfort zones, and a sense of escaping everything for a couple of hours. And don’t be underwhelmed if at first it doesn’t work out. It’s definitely hit and miss!

✨ Favourite Gold Coast café for a morning coffee?

I love popping into Liquid Things in Miami. It’s a real community down there, always someone walking past you know, and the people are so friendly.

✨ Best local restaurant for a long lunch?

Everyone knows I’m obsessed with The Tropic, Burleigh. Obviously that view, the food is superb and I just feel it’s a real treat. Otherwise the Pavillon is a must, or my local, the Henchman for fabulous food.

✨ Where do you go to unwind and get inspired?

I actually love a weekend off, which these days is rare as my markets happen on weekends. Even though all my markets are in Byron Bay, I love going there on days off as the beaches are so idyllic, I love the town, there’s so many great pubs. Maybe one day we will move down there as I spend most of my days there!!
