As I embarked on the journey to curate the perfect selection of local Gold Coast brands for Coast and Banks, I knew that every product needed to have a story—a deeper meaning that resonates with the essence of giving. That’s when I came across Morro & Co at the Burleigh Markets. The moment I met Claire, the founder and candle maker behind Morro & Co, I was captivated.

Claire's story was raw, genuine, and deeply touching. Her journey, marked by personal loss and resilience, is infused into every candle she creates. It was clear that her candles were more than just beautifully crafted products; they were symbols of hope and strength.
Choosing Morro & Co candles for our Coast and Banks gift boxes wasn’t just about their exquisite quality—it was about aligning with a brand that embodies the very essence of what I want our gift boxes to represent. Claire’s dedication to inspiring others through her work is truly remarkable, and I’m thrilled to share more about her journey, her business, and the philosophy that fuels her passion.

Interview with Claire, Founder of Morro & Co
Claire, your story is incredibly powerful. Can you share more about how your personal experiences have shaped the mission and values of Morro & Co?
My story is one that started with a lot of pain and heartbreak, unfortunately. By the time I was 40 I had lost my mum and two aunties to suicide, gone through a 12yr infertility battle that ended in never being able to be a mum, surviving an anorexia battle, my parents divorcing, a business not working along with a whole bunch of general life stuff. It’s not a story I would have written for myself, but I am so thankful for it. It is never lost on me what I have had to lose to have Morro & Co, and that is what drives me every day to do my best. I knew when I created this business it had to be profitable, but more so, I wanted it to be different from any other.
Lived experience is such a powerful gift and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to build a business that made a difference. Morro & Co is built on a 4 foundation core values inspired by my personal journey: HOPE, which drives us to envision and strive for a better future; EMPATHY, which allows us to deeply understand and connect with others; EXCELLENCE, which motivates us to consistently deliver the highest quality in all that we do; and COMMUNITY, which underscores our commitment to fostering meaningful connections and supporting each other.

What inspired you to start making candles, and how did you transition from an idea to launching Morro & Co?
I’ve loved candles for years and during Covid decided to make my own after my neighbour did the same. It first started as a way for me to save money (that made hubby happy!) and be creative. Like everyone else, I wasn’t doing much at home, so this really was a fun way to feel like I was doing something. Covid really was the hobby era for many, me included!
I lost my aunty in 2021 when I decided I wanted to be more than just a candle.
At that point, something in me snapped & I decided enough was enough. I didn’t want to go back to my job, which I wasn’t enjoying, and I wanted to do something purposeful with my days. Suicide had now taken all 3 of my nanna’s daughters, including my mum. Each day I woke up with the desire to interrupt as many days as possible and give people hope; for them to know on their worst day there was an option and that somehow in some way their situation would be okay.
When Covid lockdowns stopped, I went back to my full-time job and spent every spare minute creating and building Morro & Co. When I first started, it was a different name which worked for a while but once I got serious, I knew I had to rebrand. Morro means new day and has been the perfect fit for the message I am yelling every day. It hasn’t been a fast process by any means. Working while building a business and having a FIFO husband meant the process went a lot slower than I had hoped, BUT the gift of time has helped me become very clear on my vision and place in the marketplace.
I love the image of a single flame from a candle dancing in the stillness of the dark. It never ceases to amaze me how powerful light can be - as soon as you turn on a light, the dark is gone. That is the whole underlying idea of Morro & Co – when you light one of our candles the darkness is chased out by the light. That no matter how dark your day is, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.

You mentioned that your candles are a symbol of resilience and hope. How do you hope your customers feel when they light a Morro & Co candle?
When you experience a Morro & Co product, it must be an experience. Something you feel. There are SO many candles out there and they do an amazing job creating beautiful fragrances, and I knew I couldn’t just come in and do the same thing.
What could Morro & Co offer that no one else does?
The word on the candle was the first part that came to life. I always wonder what the word HOPE would have done for mum or my aunties, and I wonder if that would have given them enough strength to hold on for one more day. Maybe. I will never know but I know what it has done for me as I learned to grieve them and find the strength to survive a decade-long infertility battle and an eating disorder.
The best way I can say how powerful our products are, is like this - picture a busy woman, navigating the chaos of family life and work stress, pausing to glimpse words like 'HOPE', 'BE STILL', 'NEW DAY' or 'DREAM' in her space - wouldn't that gentle reminder be just what she needs to find solace and strength? I truly believe so. Why? Because it did for me on my toughest days.

The attention to detail in your candles is evident. Can you walk us through your process of creating each candle, from selecting ingredients to the final pour?
Every candle is born from a personal lived experience of myself or someone close to me, and that’s where each one starts. Often, a word sits in my heart for a few months and/or a feeling I want to create. All but a few of our products start with the word first, followed by what that word feel like. I truly believe that is the point of the difference that sets us apart.
Usually, I first decide on a name. This can take months as I pull apart the word, explore similar words, and dive into the meaning of the word. It’s a big job and probably part of the process I enjoy the most. This process helps me explore what emotion/story/feeling of the candle that makes the process of finding the perfect fragrance a whole lot easier.
The fragrance process takes just as long as I start backward. I always ask the question, “on someone’s worst day would this fragrance make them feel *insert emotion*?”. It’s hard when I find a combination I simply love the smell of, but it doesn’t fit that candle, but when I find the right fragrance…I just know. All the imagery in my head comes alive and I can see the person this candle is for. Finally, the affirmation is written.
When I write the affirmation, I picture the person I saw when I found the fragrance and the words come. My own experience helps during this time as I think what I would’ve found helpful if someone gave me this candle. Writing the affirmations is a very special part of the process and to me, it’s like writing an open letter to someone I don’t yet know.
The final step is allowing them to rest. I am VERY specific about the music I play when I pour, and I play over the candles as they set. I think it matters and my husband will come into the studio and catch me speaking positively over the candles, as if I’m putting my whisper of hope into. Intentionally, every step has a purpose and a reason.
As a Gold Coast local, why was it important for you to source your ingredients from Australian companies, and how does this reflect in the quality of your candles?
I have lived on the Gold Coast since I was 9yrs old, and it really is home. I have grown up here, I have fallen apart here, faced my greatest challenges here and I’ve become my strongest here. The Gold Coast is home. Australia is an amazing country, and this city is so special which is why it’s so important to me that I give back as much as I can. When I support fellow GC businesses and Australian companies, I know I am making a difference in someone’s world. I know what a sale means to me and I love being the reason someone feels that.
What challenges have you faced as an entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them to grow Morro & Co into the brand it is today?
Oh, this question made me laugh…what challenges haven’t I had?! Money is obviously a big one, but I have come to learn this isn’t as big of a roadblock as we often make it. It is still a hard one, especially in the early years. For every sale that comes in, there are two expenses to be paid. For me, I stayed in my job longer but with that came other problems.
Time was definitely my biggest challenge in the first few years. Working full-time when starting a business gave me funds to buy stock, but the lack of time killed my creativity and opportunities. The last thing I felt like doing was learning new skills, building a social media profile, or going out hunting for wholesalers on my days off. I took myself out on a date one day and looked at what time I could honestly give the business while I worked a 60hr week and had to give my marriage quality time when my husband was home. When I got really honest about the time I could give, growth happened. In my calendar every week, I had a set piece of time that I gave just for the business and set realistic expectations of what I could achieve from that. I took the pressure off, and I found I enjoyed life in general a whole lot more.
The other one I wanted to mention is knowing your why. When you’re chasing every opportunity and sale, you can get caught up in saying yes to everything. I’ve learned not every open door leads to good things. I know that my message isn’t light, but it also isn’t exclusive. Everyone goes through hard times in life, some more so but we all know what disappointment, fear, rejection, grief and heartbreak feel like. I’m very clear on our why and who our customer is, but in the early days I didn’t. I just kept trying to keep up with what other candle-based businesses were doing and it never worked. Woven into this is knowing what your personal story is vs your business story – this is one I am still working on. I have come to learn that Claire has her personal story and Morro & Co has its own. The two admittedly are closely linked, but some opportunities are just for me and some for Morro & Co. You get this right and you’re on your way!

Your commitment to infusing hope into lives is truly inspiring. What advice would you give to others who are going through their own difficult times?
Don’t let yesterday have any more hold over you and don’t let the weight of what might be tomorrow steal the goodness of today. Just give today your best shot. Just today. Have a shower, wash your hair, brush your teeth, and put on an outfit that makes you smile. Get out of the house, even for 30mins. These seem like small things, but they have huge impacts, and I learned this from my mum actually. On the days her depression was really bad, she would do this, and she would take herself somewhere that had people. She’d have lunch in our local shopping centre food court and go into shops where she would have to interact with another person.
At the end of the day, there is only so much people can do for you and you have to choose to do things for you. Just like there is action to switching on a light in a dark room, you have to sometimes do seemingly insignificant things to shift the heaviness. I found journaling to be very helpful. There’s something about being completely honest and just getting every thought out of your head. You feel lighter and there have been many times when I got a fresh perspective on something when I saw it all out in front of me.
Please, please, please tell someone you’re not okay on the days you’re not. I used to think my friends didn’t care or I was too much of a burden for them, when in reality they just didn’t know and were going through their own stuff. I know it hurts when they say they are busy, but don’t stop reaching out. You are loved, wanted and so important to so many people.
Finally, if you could leave your customers with one message through your candles, what would it be?
Don’t ever think you don’t matter. You do. You have people in your world who love you so much and there are people who you make smile that you may not even know about. I know life is hard at times and it might not be what you wanted it to be, but don’t let go. Every day you get a fresh page to write - don’t stop trying, don’t stop dreaming, and don’t ever, ever think there isn’t hope.
